Designing for every generation
The core philosophy behind The Play & Pause Residence was to create a vertically integrated home that respects the distinct rhythms of multi-generational living. The design intent was to move beyond standard landscaping and instead curate “experiential zones”—spaces that transition seamlessly from the public welcome of the street to the private whimsy of childhood, and finally, to the serene open skies of the terrace. From a welcoming front porch to a whimsical ‘safari’ zone for the little ones, and finally, a rooftop retreat for the adults.
Project Highlights
The Threshold: A Modern Welcome (Front Yard)
The journey begins at the ground level, where the facade serves as a clean, modern canvas. We utilized a pristine white palette offset by warm, integrated strip lighting on the steps to create a floating effect. The front porch is designed not just as an entryway, but as a “pause point”—a social interface with the neighbourhood featuring casual seating that invites conversation while maintaining privacy through varying levels.
The Imagination Station (Kids' Play Deck)
Moving upward, we transformed a standard balcony into a dedicated ‘Safari Zone.’ This semi-outdoor space is designed for safety and stimulation. Protected by high glass railings to maintain views without compromising security, the area features soft puzzle-mat flooring for active play. The custom joinery—including house-frame shelving and a pegboard wall—encourages organization, while the vibrant giraffe mural adds a layer of narrative and whimsy, turning a functional space into a storybook corner.
The Sky Sanctuary (Terrace)
The crowning jewel of the residence is the rooftop terrace. Designed as an adult retreat, this area contrasts the playful energy below with sophisticated material choices. We introduced a terracotta Jali (breeze block) screen as a focal point, providing an earthy contrast to the cool blue railings and modern white planter boxes. The layout includes: Social Zoning: A swing and loose furniture for dynamic gatherings.
Ambient Architecture: Built-in concrete benches with under-seat LED lighting that define the perimeter without cluttering the space.
Green Integration: Large planters and a pergola structure ensure the space remains cool and connected to nature.
